Feeding the Homeless Cards for Shut-Ins The Body of Christ

Students Prepare Meal Meal for the Emergency Shelter

Our Middle School students prepared a meal for the residents at the Emergency Shelter in December. Cindi Mac Swain organized the meal prepaparation, and provided the students with First Congo's signature chili pepper aprons.

The menu included lasagna, vegetable and gelatin salads, garlic bread, and two desserts. Emergency Shelter residents thanked the students for taking the time to prepare their favorite meal.

Students who would like to prepare meals on a regular basis should contact Cindy Mac Swain. Students are welcome to help prepare and serve Sunday morning breakfast once a month.

Cards for Shut-Ins

Students Make CardsEvery year, our congregation purchases poinsettia plants to give to our elderly members who are not able to come to church. Our church school students make handmade Christmas cards to be delivered with the plants.

This year, middle school students created wrapping paper collage cards and composed their own heartfelt greetings. The messages, each one unique and special, told our shut-ins that they are not forgotten during the Holidays.

Students were surprised and humbled to get thank-you cards from those who received a poinsettia and a Christmas card. Our pastoral staff tell us that nursing home residents display the beautiful gifts from their church proudly.

Body of Christ Cookie We Are One Body

The culminating event for the Middle School's Unwrapping Our Gifts unit was the baking of a symbolic "Body of Christ" cookie.

Groups of six students worked in silence to create the cookie, with each student responsible for making one part of the body.(Can you even imagine 50 middle school students working in silence?)

Each student was allowed to eat the body part he or she created once the cookie was baked. The group that made this cookie tried to keep the parts separate to avoid sharing germs, but the parts all grew together in the oven anyway. The leaders were thrilled to share this teachable moment with their students!
