In our "Workshop Rotation" Church School, students study a Bible story for six weeks, learning about it in a different way in a new room each week. Students attend a children's sermon in the Sanctuary, and then move to the Theater for a gathering and music time before proceeding to their lesson rooms. Approximately every seven weeks, on Church Family Sunday, the children attend the entire worship service in the Sanctuary with their parents, and participate in a service designed to celebrate the unit that has just been completed. For more information about the Workshop Rotation Model, click on the logo above.
This dual purpose room makes it possible for students to experience the Bible through all their senses. A simple but functional and well-equipped kitchen area allows children to make and eat their own handiwork that relates to a specific Biblical concept or story. (We don't feed them honey and locusts, but they might get to make unleavened bread!) The chalkboard walls in the larger art room provide a space for spontaneous expression, whether in images or graffiti. The windows are framed in three-dimensional sculpture displays, including a seashore scene, Joseph's Coat of Many Colors, and Noah's Ark.
A splash of stars and planets on these walls lets visitors know that the sky is not the limit in God's cosmos. In this room, students are able to take studying the Bible to a new level. They play learning games and visit Internet web sites created for church school students. Students can also access word processing and graphics programs to write newsletters, cartoons or invitations, or make greeting cards for shut-ins or people who are ill.
The scripture tent serves as our storytelling room; its richly evocative space provides a place to let the mind and spirit grow. Students may cluster under the tent canopy for a prayer, gather around the "campfire" for a song, or face a mural with scenery to match the story they are hearing. If you look carefully at the painted walls of the room, you will see the turbulent sea of the Noah story, Moses' Mt. Sinai, Mary and Martha's home, and much more! A small proscenium allows for mini theatrical events.
That's right! A theater with genuine theater seats and a real popcorn machine! Our students might be the audience watching a video about Joseph in Egypt, or then again, they might be the performers presenting the story of Joseph. Both options are feasible in this room, with a big screen, a stage area, lighting and sound equipment, and storage for props and costumes. This room also serves as our gathering space each Sunday morning after the children attend the children's sermon time in the Sanctuary with their parents.
